Can you believe the we’re into the final (full) working month of 2018?? Each year seems to be going faster than the last, and with that it’s easy to get caught up running of our businesses that we neglect to spend time planning the message that we need to share, our story.
Do you find yourself sitting down at the computer with the intension of writing content for your website or social media but you just don’t know what to say? Do you find that you’re getting frustrated with this mental block which leads you to shutting down the laptop and walking away for days/weeks before you pluck up the courage to attempt this exercise again? Meanwhile your overall marketing effort is stagnant.
You need a content calendar!!! There’s a drumroll playing in my head here…
What is a Content Calendar
In a previous blog – Content Marketing and Its Benefits Casey spoke about the benefits of content marketing, but we can’t implement such a strategy without the aid of a content calendar. This usually comes in the form of an Excel document and is quite detailed with; title, specific captions, content type, link etc.
Industry experts, me included like to prepare these content calendars on a three monthly basis. That gives us enough time to monitor the results and see what is working and what may need to be iterated. So let’s get back to my original point, why do we need to do a content calendar?
You probably are reading this going this is fairly obvious, but it is amazing how many businesses don’t have one in place.
(1) Unleash Your Ideas
Do you remember the mind maps that we used to draw in school when we were preparing to write an essay? Do you remember the comfort you used to get from referring to that map for ideas as you wrote furiously during an exam or homework? I do. Today, that same feeling is conjured up from the content calendars I prepare for myself and for my clients. Preparing these ahead of time allows me to unleash my ideas in a non pressured environment.
(2) Stay Focussed
Just like the good old fashioned mind map, content calendars keep us focused on the story that we wish to tell. It highlights our key messages that we need to share, the call to actions, the mediums we are going to use to share the content and most importantly it allows us to ensure that we are aligning with our marketing goals.
The content calendar enables us to plan the collateral that we will need to share our story effectively. Be it a graphic or video the content calendar gives us the time we need to create this collateral in time for its release date and without the stress.
I always say that any good social media plan is consistent, relevant and approachable. This success comes down to the time spent on a well thought out content calendar where we have considered what our target audience will want to hear from us and how they will digest this content best, be it in the form of a blog or video. Lastly it helps us to ensure that we share this content on a regular basis to remain consistent.
